Cydonia oblonga ‘Portugal’
Portugal is a large (5″-7″ long), pear shaped, old European variety that is larger in the middle and tapers at both ends. Portugal quince stews well and becomes a deep crimson when cooked. Mixing one Portugal with a dozen apples will make a uniquely pink sauce with a superior, pineapple-like quince flavor.
Portugal is highly productive and a regular cropper, but is less cold-hardy than many varieties. It’s also particularly well-suited for hot summer areas. Quince trees are self fertile and showy, with big white blossoms in late spring and unusual, fuzzy yellow fruits in fall.
